NCC was raised in Karnataka in 1948 with strength of 10 Officers and 315 Army Wing cadets under HQ 10 Circle Cadet Corps in the erstwhile Mysore Sate. Over a period of time, there have been additions in str and reloc of units and the State of Goa too was brought under the ambit of the Directorate. Presently the Directorate has Six (06) Group Headquarters and 56 Major / Minor Units, which covers 628 Schools and 450 Colleges, spread over all 30 districts of Kar and Goa.
Air Cmde BS Kanwar, VSM, was commissioned in the IAF on 14 Dec 1991. He is an alumni of National Defence Academy, Khadakawasla and Navigation Training School. He has done all the mandatory service courses like Qualified Navigation Instructor Course, Air Staff Course, Higher Defence Management Course and Advance Professional Programme in Public Administration. His important staff tenures include Air Force Examiner, at Air Crew Examiner Board, Air Force Inspector at Directorate of Air Staff Inspection, Directing Staff at Defence Service Staff College, Wellington, Chief Navigation Instructor of Navigation Training School. He has commanded Navigation Training School and Air Force Station Madh Island Mumbai.
He has flown on AN-32, AVRO and IL76 Aircraft. He has flying experience of 4000 hr and has flown in every sector of the country as well as taken part in international exercises.
His academic qualification includes BSC, Master in Defence and Strategic Studies, Master in Management Studies, MPhil in Defence on Strategic Studies, MPhil in Public Adminsitration.
He took over as Deputy Director General Karnataka & Goa NCC Directorate on 28 May 2021.
