Uttar Pradesh (UP) NCC came into existence in the yr 1948. HQ NCC Dte (UP) was raised on 17 Jan 1950. It was then known as “HQ No.6 Circle NCC”. The first Circle Cdr was Lt Col Dilbagh Singh.
With the passage of time, NCC (UP) underwent changes and the number of units incr from 8 to 46. The Girls Divwas added in 1949, Air Wing in 1950 and Naval Wing in 1952, making NCC (UP) a Tri Service organisation. The apt of Cdr was upgraded to the rank of Brig on 21 Nov 1962 and Col ADJ Victor, Circle Cdr, took over as Dir, NCC, UP in the rank of Brig. During his tenure, NCC in the State prog well and number of NCC units went up to123.
The rapid expansion of NCC necessitated an intermediary HQ between Units and the Dte to exercise better comd, cont, supervision of trg and other NCC activities. Thus concept of Gp HQ emerged and for the first time fourteen Gp HQ came into existence in Dec 1962.
Consequent to Chinese aggression in 1962, NCC was made compulsory. A number of NCC units and sub units were raised. To provide NCC cover to all districts of the State, the concept of NCC Rifles was implemented. With this, the number of NCC units incr to 186 in the State. However, in 1968, NCC was again made a voluntary force.
By the turn of century, the Dte comprised of 14 Gp HQ and 123 NCC Units spread all over the states of UP and present day Uttarakhand, with a sanctioned cadet strength of 1,41,555.
After the creation of Uttaranchal State in Nov 2001, three Gp HQ (Dehradun, Nainital & Roorkee) and sixteen units were tfr to the new state and the remaining 11 Gps and 107 units remained in UP. Later, three new units ie 31 UP (G) Bn at Noida, 32 UP (G) Bn at Jhansi and 33 UP Bn NCC at Amroha were raised in 2010, 2012 & 2014 respectively.
